Stream Farm Organic chickens are bought in as day-old chicks. After 2 weeks in a small broodery just next to our farm-house, they spend 10 more weeks living on the farm and eating only natural organic food until they weigh about 4¼ lbs. They run freely in and out of their spacious sheds in groups of not more than 200 onto the surrounding grass and are shut up at night to protect them from predators – mainly, the wily old dog fox who sits and watches them from high up on the hill. The houses are moved onto new ground with every group of chickens. Fully – grown chickens then go to a small organic-certified abattoir just over the border in Devon where they are hung for a week after slaughter. We plan to bring this process onto the farm in the Autumn so that the chickens will not have to travel quite so far.
We presently deliver chickens within a radius of about 20 miles of the farm. We are planning to bring them up to London once we have enough firm, regular, weekly or fortnightly orders. If you would like to place such an order, please email your name and address to us and we will be in touch once we begin. We will probably be delivering free within a 2 or 3 miles radius of our main outlet in Battersea, South West London.
The chickens sell at £6.50 per kilo
